Sonia Rezkalah

Author, Freedom Writer, Motivational Speaker

Sonia Rezkalah is a motivational speaker, and one of the original Freedom Writers; a group of students from Long Beach, California, who used writing as a form of self-expression and a vessel for hope. Inspired by their English teacher, Erin Gruwell, Sonia and her classmates documented the adversities they faced in anonymous journal entries, stories that were later published in The Freedom Writers Diary and adapted into a major motion picture.

As a Freedom Writer, Sonia has courageously shared her personal journey of healing from childhood trauma and the challenges her family endured navigating a new country. What changed the trajectory of her life was the mentorship of Ms. Gruwell who not only instilled the value of education, but also opened the doors of her classroom to Sonia’s parents. Her high school years became a transformative chapter, not only for her, but for her entire family.

Today, Sonia uses the power of storytelling to inspire others to rise above their circumstances and rediscover their “Why.” Her work centers on helping educators, students, parents, and community leaders reconnect with purpose, reframe their challenges, and lead with heart. She creates spaces for healing, growth, trust-building, and authentic human connection; all core elements of high-impact family engagement.

Whether speaking to youth about self-worth or guiding adults through generational healing and leadership, Sonia’s message is always clear: your story matters, your voice has power, and transformation is possible.
