Before her formal career in education, Tomekia garnered invaluable experience in childcare and youth development. She worked in various capacities within school systems in Tennessee and Georgia, charter schools, daycares, and early learning facilities. Her early interactions with children laid the foundation for her deep passion for nurturing their growth and potential. Little did she know that life would soon present her with an unforeseen challenge that would profoundly alter her course.
In response to this health crisis, Tomekia and her family made the courageous decision to return to Chattanooga, Tennessee. During this period, her husband assumed the role of a pastor, while Tomekia embarked on her fulfilling career as an educator within Hamilton County's School System. Her life was a delicate balancing act, playing the roles of both a pastor's wife and a dedicated educator while caring for her two young children, both of whom were now insulin-dependent diabetics. Tomekia knew her life had taken a new direction, one marked by unyielding determination and a relentless drive to make a difference.
Tomekia's commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. She dedicated herself to teaching her children from a young age, fostering a love for learning and a passion for knowledge. Her son, growing up in a household with limited resources, learned to read using the King James Version of the Bible, the only book available. Her oldest daughter's education began while she was still in the womb, learning the foundations of reading. Four years later, her youngest daughter embarked on her educational journey, with a focus on developing strong math skills.
Tomekia's dedication bore fruit. Her son, initially disengaged from traditional schooling, eventually dropped out with a GPA of 0.17. Yet, his determination and resilience led him to obtain his GED, graduating in the top 10% in the state of Tennessee across all subject areas. Her eldest daughter excelled academically, completing all 12 years of school, earning a Bachelor of Science degree on a full scholarship from Spelman University, and subsequently obtaining a Master's in Business from Wake Forest University. Her youngest daughter, a graduate of STEM of Chattanooga, emerged as a rising artist and currently holds the position of Assistant Director of Finance at the Chattanooga Zoo.
Tomekia's transformative journey with her own children served as the catalyst for a deeper calling. Motivated by a profound desire to help children and parents navigate the educational journey effectively, she developed a unique and holistic approach. She identified six key elements encompassing writing, reading, sensory science, math, and circle time, creating foundational skills in language, numeracy, problem-solving, and social skills through hands-on, play-based learning.
