This workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of effective strategies for engaging families in high school education. Drawing on findings from my dissertation, ‘Qualitative Study on the Perceptions of High School Families and High School Teachers Regarding Family Engagement,’ the session will offer practical tools and techniques for fostering meaningful family involvement in the academic and extracurricular lives of high school students.

In this inspiring session, renowned author, school leader, and TEDx speaker, Nathaniel Provencio shares four transformative lessons from parents and families that revolutionized his school’s culture from apathy to empowerment. Participants will learn effective strategies to boost parent and family school attendance, enhance family academic understanding, raise positive school attitudes and perceptions, and highlight the power of advocacy in creating a thriving school environment. This session promises to provide valuable insights and practical approaches to foster a more connected and empowered school community.

To build trust and relationships with families, it is crucial for school staff to equitably engage with families to ensure the success of diverse student populations. Educators have stated that family engagement continues to be challenging, especially when families’ culture and identity differ from the educators. Often, family engagement practices do not work because educators don’t consider the family’s culture and allow detrimental implicit bias to seep into their mental models. Uncovering the root cause of the under-engagement of families and failing to create two-way communication that is equitable and sustainable is pertinent to moving the meter forward. Using the Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family-School Partnerships and Street Data Framework, the presenters will discuss the root causes of failing family engagement endeavors and identify strategies that work with engaging minoritized and marginalized families in the margin.

Organizations that thrive, grow, and make a profound impact are blessed with exceptional leaders. But most leadership models are based on the experience of for-profit organizations. Human Service Organizations are different, our leaders need a mission driven leadership model. Participants will be engaged in a dialogue about how to adopt and apply each of the five truths to strengthen and increase the impact and reach of their family engagement initiatives.
